You might not know who discovered laws of electricity or invented chocolate but you are sure to have heard about Google. This web-based search engine was an idea of two talented and enthusiastic Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who chose it to be their research project designed to develop technologies for an integrated digital library. What originally was the university web site grew up to be one of the world’s best search engines.

However, today we are going to talk about things from the history of Google that some people may not know.

1. The name Google is a successful spelling mistake. It was supposed to be googol, which means 10 to the hundredth power. The founders wanted the name to reflect their intention to arrange and make accessible a large amount of information, which is available on the net.

2. Another widespread theory says that the name was chosen by the company’s first big investor who signed out a check for $100,000 to the company named Google, which at that time did not even exist. So Larry Page and Sergey Brin were forced to rename the company in order to cash the check.

3. Google was found by people who knew very little about HTML encoding which is why its interface is so very simple and bare.

4. When Google introduced the refined speller checker feature “Did you mean”, which allowed users to make their search easier and quicker, its traffic doubled.

5. Google allows its engineers to spend 20 percent of their working time developing their own projects and ideas. Many of the company’s well-known initiatives stem from this working model.

6. Google receives more than a billion search requests every day, which come from everywhere including Antarctica.

7 .Google home page can be translated into as many as 88 different languages including Latin and Urdu.

8. Google’s Doodles, which are special logos designed to feature a certain important event, appeared in 1998 when Larry Page and Sergey Brin decided to inform their users about their absence in case of emergency, if for example the servers crashed. The first such Doodle was dedicated to the Burning Man Festival.

9. A Noogler is a name used to describe a new employee in the Google Company, while the long-time employees are referred to as “Googlers”.

10. Google provides bikes for its workers to move from one building to another. All of the bikes are unlocked and any employee can use of them in case they need them.

In general Google is very concerned about the well-being of its workers and wants them to feel as comfortable as possible. That is why a doctor regularly comes to the Google campus to check on the employees. In 2007 Google was ranked by Forbes as the best company to work for.
