At some point of his or her career, everyone has to go through a job interview. No matter how much we want it to be otherwise, the truth is that we are not always able to control the situation. Things might go wrong; people can react in the way we do not expect them to. The only thing to do is to prepare hard and try to learn as much as we can about what we can expect.

Anyone who has had an experience of looking for a job is almost sure to have a dreadful story to tell about how a seemingly smooth and unchallenging interview turned out to be a nightmare. Why do such things happen? Is it an accident that interviewers who seemed to be nice and friendly suddenly become tough and unapproachable? To make the long story short, here are seven types of job interviews that are in use nowadays.

• One-on-one job interview is one of the most widespread and traditional types. Here an applicant is required to talk to a manager face-to-face answering his questions. This type is one of the easiest since it is usually consistent and logical with no one to interrupt or distract you. It also provides for a much more relaxed and secure atmosphere.

• Panel interview involves a few interviewers who will be asking, checking and trying you in any way possible. The good advice here is to try to stay equally friendly and cooperative with each and every of them. Keep in mind there is always someone who is in charge as well as someone who tries to remain uninvolved but at the same time follows the conversation closely.

• Phone interview. Although it is not a common practice for big companies to hire somebody over the phone, this might actually be your ticket to the ‘real’ interview. Thus, it is better to prepare for something like that in advance rather than be caught off guard and appear clumsy.

• Behavioral event interview is designed to give your potential employers an idea of how you would behave in certain situations. When answering questions, try to use demonstrative examples from your work experience, but at the same time stay focused. Too much minutiae can ruin the whole thing.

• Although it seems like a good and promising start, lunch interviews are full of hazards one should be aware of in order to sail through. Apart from the traditional job interview questions, you might be required to do some small talk, demonstrate your dining etiquette and adaptability.

• Group interviews do not look very scary at the first sight, but the truth is they present a bigger challenge for an applicant. As there are a great number of job-hungry candidates, you will have to try hard to stand out and take the lead.

• This type of job interviews has many names. Some people call it stress interview; others choose the word ‘awkward’. Whatever you call it, be sure you understand what there is to look out for. You will never know you are being stress-interviewed until you find yourself quivering and sweating, desperately trying to find the most appropriate answer. During such interviews, you might face aggressive and sarcastic behavior on the part of your interviewer. The main thing is to preserve an equal mind and not let emotions overwhelm you.

Job interview might be challenging but the right attitude of mind and due preparation will help you feel at-ease and take control of any such situation.
