Earning a Harvard degree in a field of interest and then landing a job with a big multinational company is a win-win situation. However, even if you failed to complete your college education and dropped out before you got a chance to consider any worthy job offer, it does not mean you cannot go on to launch your own multi-million social networking site, co-found the largest technology company in the world or produce and star in a film masterpiece. Here is a list of ten famous figures who once failed but then managed to make it through and become the richest, most influential and well-known people in the world.

Bill Gates

Bill Gates is one of the most successful college dropouts of our century. A son of a schoolteacher and an attorney Bill Gates was destined to become a prominent Harvard student but studying law never really attracted him and so he decided to leave only after 2 years of college. At that time, he already knew what he was going to do instead. It took him a little over a year to co-found Microsoft the world’s biggest software company along with his childhood friend Paul Allen.

Mark Zuckerberg

The second place goes to Mark Zuckerberg who also chose to realize his life-long dream and launch the world’s best-known social networking site Facebook rather than pursue a career of a psychologist that his Harvard degree would have provided for him. He never regretted the decision, which allowed him to become a billionaire by the age of 23.

Steve Jobs

Had Steve Jobs decided to complete his degree at Reed College the world might have never had all the amazing technologies, which this truly talented and inspired person created. Instead, he might have become a really nice calligrapher.

Michael Dell

Michael Dell is another college dropout who made it big. Attending the University of Texas at Austin Michael Dell was determined to become a doctor just like his father and brother. However, soon he dropped out to take a bigger step, which eventually changed his life and made him the 41st richest person in the world according to the 2012 Forbes Billionaires List.

Matt Mullenweg

The founder of WordPress, a personal publishing platform for bloggers, Matt Mullenweg majored in Political Science at the University of Houston before leaving it to seek employment with CNET Networks in 2004. Soon he left it to begin his own company, which turned out to be a great success, worth about $200 million.

James Cameron

An Oscar-winning film director James Cameron dropped out of California State University, Fullerton, where he studied physics and later English. Before becoming one of the world’s most famous producers and film directors, he worked as a driver and a janitor. Although he never had any formal higher education, James Cameron self-studied things related to film-making.

Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford studied philosophy at Ripon College but decided to quit to become an actor. It, however, did not happen until after Star Wars hit the screens.
