As adults, we spend most of our waking hours at work or thinking about work. Statistically, an average person spends over 100,000 hours at work in the course of their lifetime. That fact alone is a good reminder of the importance of staying happy and consent at work.

As a rule, good careers come with numerous benefits such as high salary, paid holidays, secure working conditions, stimulating working environment, health insurance etc. But there are also hidden pitfalls that one should be aware of. All the above-mentioned perks aim to encourage and enable people to spend more time at work and can ultimately destroy the delicate work-life balance.

At some point people realize just how exhausted and stressed out they are and start losing their interest and motivation. To avoid this, here is the list of eight simple but effective ways to recover a healthy attitude to work and find the happiness you need.

1. Choose to Be Happy

Although many people find it hard to believe but happiness is largely our deliberate choice. You can be happy at work if you choose to be happy. It is as simple as that. At the same time, simplest ideas usually turn out to be extremely difficult when it comes to putting them into practice.

Your boss might be a tyrant who is forcing you to work weekends, your promotion might be slipping away and you might not have had a raise in years, but if you still manage to find something positive in your work, you will be happy. Think about the aspects of your work that you really enjoy.

2. Do Things that You Like

Your work should not prevent you from doing something that you like. You may or may not be pleased with your job in general but there is surely something you like doing. There must be. Your task is to discover what it is and enjoy every minute of doing it. Review your interests and skills and put them into action. Your work will not seem so bad when you do something that makes you feel happy.

3. Keep Developing Professionally and Personally

There is a widespread misconception that says our bosses are the ones who are responsible for helping their employees develop professionally. A good boss does everything he can to promote his workers’ skills and the bad boss simply uses the existing skills to derive his own benefit. That is a wrong idea. You are the person most interested in your professional and personal growth meaning you have to take charge of the whole development process and your boss can only provide some meaningful help if he wishes.

4. Be Proactive

Most employees complain they do not know much about what’s going on around them at work, what projects are being carried out and when staff reshuffle is being planned. These people remain on the sidelines waiting for their boss to fill them in and tell them what to do. However, the boss is often too busy doing his or her own job. To change the situation, start with developing your own information network. By getting first-hand news and information, you will be able to react quickly and effectively.

5. Value the Feedback

If your boss is not giving you any feedback, you might want to reconsider your strategy. The odds are, you are not performing to the best of your abilities or cannot present the results of your work successfully so that the management will notice them.

If you feel positive about your work, you can approach your boss directly and ask him for a feedback. It is however important to feel equally friendly towards appraisal and criticism, for this is how you can really improve your work.

6. Do Not Take On Too Much

The primary cause of unhappiness and stress at work is one’s inability to keep all the commitments they make. Instead of spending your time looking for excuses for failing to keep a commitment and agonizing over the consequences, use this time to perform the tasks you can complete. Work to develop good time-management and self-organization skills. Learn to prioritize. Take your time to assess a particular commitment requested of you before agreeing to complete it. Stay realistic about things you can and cannot do. If your workload is too much to cope with on your own, do not be afraid to ask your boss for help or some extra resources.

7. Avoid Negativity Around You

If you have made up your mind to be happy at work, try to avoid people or things that can upset you. Unhappy people, envious gossip or disappointing conversations can ruin your day completely.

8. Do Not Be Afraid Of Conflicts

Most people consider conflicts of any kind to be a scary, harmful, and negative experience. Psychologists say the image results from our lack of skills to participate in a meaningful conflict. Done properly, a conflict can help you accomplish your personal and professional goals in a constructive way. By disagreeing with each other, people tend to seek ways to lobby their ideas and interests, which in the end can make a whole organization much healthier.

If all these ideas and tips do not help you stay happy at work, it is time to consider your other options. You don’t want to spend your entire life doing something you dislike and growing more and more unhappy.
