The majority of busy people will tell you just how difficult and stressful one’s life can be if you try to juggle the demands of a successful career and personal relationships. Still many of them manage to emerge victorious out of this situation and maintain a healthy balance between work and family.

This might seem like a real challenge especially for someone who strives to give everything their best try and wants to accomplish their goals 100%.

Researchers say that our understanding of what the perfect work-life balance means can vary over time. The right balance for us when we are young and single can be very different from when we have families and children.

Tip 1: Prioritize

Carefully consider and evaluate the importance and urgency of all things that compete for your time, then decide which professional and personal commitments you can keep and which can be discarded. Make the list of the most meaningful things and focus on giving them 100% of your attention. Scattering your time and energy between three equally important tasks will result in all three remaining incomplete.

Tip 2: Create a Plan

Once you have sorted out your priorities, try to create a plan of how you are going to accomplish your highest priorities. The plan should include a detailed schedule with strict deadlines, progress targets and self-reporting tools.

Tip 3: Stay Disciplined

The hardest part about following the plan is staying disciplined enough to actually meet your goals. You are most likely to be constantly challenged to change your priorities or take on more. Appointments will be requested, difficulties will arise, meetings will last longer than planned, deadlines will change, and there will always a temptation to make an exception. But if you just stick to your plan, you will be able to handle those without having to make excuses or exceptions! Technology has been created to make our lives easier and less stressful. Do take advantage of it! Many busy people use technology the wrong way and end up having their life totally controlled. Learn to ban technology from your life sometimes so that you can focus on family and friends.

If you really want to maintain a healthy work-life balance, you have to realize and put up with the fact that you cannot do it all. Learn to say “no” to things that are not essential. Stop agreeing to do things just because saying “no” will make you feel uncomfortable.

Tip 7: Fight the Guilt

Some people can be perfect and loving parents and spouses, others are successful in business, but don’t believe those who say they are great in anything they do! Real people can’t give 100% to everything they do. So do not feel guilty if you sometimes miss your child’s basketball game or refuse to attend a colleague’s going-away party.

Tip 8: Rethink the Idea of “Perfect”

This one should probably be the first on the list. If you feel constantly overwhelmed or understand that things tend to get out of control too often, the lack of time management or goal-setting skills might not be the problem. Take a closer look at your standards. Are they realistic? Can they really be achieved without sacrificing anything important?

Achieving a healthy work-life balance requires time and effort. Things are likely to change slowly. It is important that you sometimes take short breaks to assess how well you’re progressing and even rethink your strategies.
